Chiropractic acupuncture is the art, science and philosophy of treating disease and injury by stimulating specific energy modulating points on the skin and is an approved specialty within the chiropractic profession. Methods of stimulation include, but are not limited to: needle insertion, electrical stimulation, light, heat, laser and pressure. Chiropractic acupuncture treats a wide variety of health conditions which includes all systems and tissues of the body and focuses special attention to the relationship between the spine, nervous system and the meridian system. Chiropractic acupuncture is inclusive of all diagnostic and therapeutic principles and procedures taught in acupuncture programs sponsored by CCE accredited colleges, chiropractic state associations and post-graduate certified instructors (1).
The discovery and implementation of acupuncture is accredited to ancient China, between 5,000-7,000 years ago. It reached the US around 1971 and many states now support its practice, including South Dakota. The premise of acupuncture is based on an energy network traveling just below the surface of the skin, originally discovered by early Chinese physicians. The network, often referred to as a series of energetic meridians, harmonizes the objectives and activities of the body's circulatory, nervous, muscular, digestive, genitourinary and other vital systems. If the energy flow of these meridians becomes blocked or weakened, symptoms and dis-ease or full blown disease manifest. A trained acupuncturist will assess the presenting symptoms and complaints of the patient, listen to the patient's body through various techniques, and stimulate appropriate acupoints in order to restore harmony, or 'chi' within the body (2).
